PEARL KNOWLEDGE

Look a little closer.

There is more to a pearl than its shape. GIA identifies seven factors for understanding pearl quality.

Size

Compare millimetre measurements as well as the way a pearl sits when worn.

Shape

Round, oval, drop and irregular baroque shapes each offer a different expression.

Colour

Look at the main colour, any overtones and iridescent effects.

Lustre

Notice the brightness and definition of reflections on the pearl.

Surface

Look closely at marks and irregularities, including their extent and visibility.

Nacre

The pearl’s layered coating contributes to lustre and durability.

Matching

For multiple pearls, consider how their size, shape, colour and other qualities work together.
